A tie with squares in it sounds loud and is not. Bond’s geometric silk tie in The World Is Not Enough sits at the neck of a dark suit, doing its job without comment, and Turnbull & Asser sells a version today. The Turnbull & Asser Square Silk Tie is made as seen on Bond, and it is available new.
In the film
Pierce Brosnan‘s Bond wears the tie in the MI6 headquarters scene and in the Q-boat chase on the Thames. Sources describe the colours differently: our catalogue notes grey, tan and burnt orange squares, while Turnbull & Asser describes interlocking squares in red, gold and silver against a deep ground. We treat the maker’s version as the closest match we can identify and suggest you look at its pictures before ordering.
The details of the Square Silk Tie
Interlocking squares. The pattern is geometric, with the squares set against a dark ground so that it reads from a distance as texture, not decoration.
Hand-sewn in Gloucester. The silk ties are sewn by hand by the maker’s artisans. The silk itself is woven in Italy.
Tipping built to last. The tipping is made from acetate, which Turnbull & Asser says is designed to withstand abrasion from belts and zips. A hidden loop of bonded thread on the blade lets the tie ruche and settle back after wearing.
100% silk, 9.5cm wide. Standard proportions, a broad blade that fills a spread collar properly.
Wearing it now
Treat this as a pattern tie with plain surroundings. A charcoal or navy suit, a white or pale blue shirt with a spread collar, and nothing else decorated is enough. In our view the dark ground makes it easy to wear in the evening and as comfortable at a Monday meeting as at dinner.
Care. Specialist dry clean only, and no machine washing, bleach or tumble drying. Let the knot drop out at the end of the day.
In the same spirit
For another patterned silk tie, the Alexander Olch Avery necktie is burgundy twill with bourette spots. It is an alternative with a similar role, not a match for this one.
