Spectre, the fourth Daniel Craig film, covers a lot of ground. The 2015 film, directed by Sam Mendes, opens in Mexico City, moves through London to Rome, climbs into the Austrian Alps, crosses Morocco by train and ends on the Thames. Most of those places are real and open to visitors. This guide covers where each scene was filmed and what you can see today.

The short answer

The production announced its locations on 4 December 2014, four days before filming began: Pinewood Studios, London, Mexico City, Rome, Tangier and Erfoud in Morocco, and Sölden, Obertilliach and Lake Altaussee in Austria. The opening was filmed around the Zócalo in Mexico City. In Rome the funeral used the Museo della Civiltà Romana and the car chase ended at Ponte Sisto. The clinic in the Alps is the ice Q restaurant above Sölden, the crater base is Gara Medouar near Erfoud, and the finale ends on Westminster Bridge. One surprise: the outside of the palace where SPECTRE meets in ‘Rome’ is Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire.

How we checked

The location list comes from the production’s own announcement, released by Sony Pictures. For Austria we use the Tyrol tourist board, the ice Q restaurant, Ötztal Tourismus and the boat company on Lake Altaussee. Elsewhere we rely on the Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations and The James Bond Dossier, and say so each time.

Mexico City: the Day of the Dead

The James Bond Dossier says the opening was filmed between 19 and 31 March 2015, in and around the Plaza de la Constitución, the great square better known as the Zócalo. The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations places the start of Bond’s walk in the lobby of the Gran Hotel Ciudad de México, at 16 de Septiembre 82. The helicopter fight above the square is in a Bo 105.

The parade itself was invented for the film. BBC News reported that Mexico City held its first Day of the Dead parade on 29 October 2016, and that tourism officials said the idea came from the opening of Spectre. The Guardian noted that the day is more usually kept quietly, at home or at family graves.

What Bond wears in Mexico City

Under the skeleton costume Bond wears the Tom Ford O’Connor suit in a blue windowpane check, with black calf Crockett & Jones Norwich shoes.

London: M, Q and the river

Back in London, The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations identifies several places you can walk past. The courtyard where M reprimands Bond is inside the Treasury building on Great George Street, off Whitehall; you can see the building from the street, but the courtyard is not open to the public. The entrance to Q’s riverside workshop was filmed on the Regent’s Canal at Camden Lock. M sulks over lunch at Rules on Maiden Lane in Covent Garden, which the Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations says was founded in 1798, and the safe house is on Spring Gardens, beside Admiralty Arch.

The SIS Building at Vauxhall Cross, the derelict old MI6 in the film, is the real headquarters of the Secret Intelligence Service and is not open to visitors, but it is easy to see from Vauxhall Bridge. The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations says the closing chase starts there, runs along the Thames under Lambeth Bridge and past the Houses of Parliament, and ends on Westminster Bridge.

Rome: the funeral and the Tiber

The James Bond Dossier says Bond’s arrival in Rome in the Aston Martin DB10 begins at Porta San Pancrazio, then cuts to the Arch of Constantine and the Colosseum. The funeral was shot at the Museo della Civiltà Romana in the EUR district. The museum’s official website says it is temporarily closed for restoration and safety work, so for now you see the colonnade from the square outside.

The night chase with Mr Hinx in the Jaguar C-X75 crosses both sides of the Tiber. The James Bond Dossier names the Vatican and the Borgo district, and the Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations adds St Peter’s Square and a run down steps onto the Lungotevere, the riverside road. It ends with the DB10 in the river beside Ponte Sisto, the old footbridge to Trastevere.

What Bond wears in Rome

For the funeral and the chase Bond wears a black Tom Ford Windsor three-piece suit in herringbone, Dents Fleming driving gloves and Crockett & Jones Camberley boots.

Blenheim Palace: the SPECTRE meeting

Both The James Bond Dossier and the Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations say the exterior of the palazzo where SPECTRE meets is Blenheim Palace at Woodstock, near Oxford. The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations adds that the marble hall inside was a set on the 007 Stage at Pinewood, and the Dossier says the start of the car chase was filmed at Blenheim too. Blenheim lists James Bond among the productions filmed there. The palace and park are open to ticketed visitors.

Austria: Altaussee

Bond crosses Lake Altaussee by boat to find Mr White. The lake’s boat company says filming took place there in January 2015 and that its solar boat served as Sam Mendes’s directing platform. It now offers a Bond package for groups, a one-hour cruise with a stop at the Jagdhaus Seewiese, priced on request, the old hunting lodge on the north-east shore that the fan site On the Tracks of 007 identifies as Mr White’s cabin. The lodge, now a restaurant, says it is a 30 minute walk from Altaussee church, and Styria’s tourist board says the Seewiese is reached on foot or by the solar boat from May to October, and that the lakeside path is closed in winter because of rockfall and avalanche risk.

At the cabin Bond wears a Dior Homme navy jacket over an N.Peal cable roll neck, with Crockett & Jones Radnor boots.

Sölden: ice Q and 007 ELEMENTS

The outside of the Hoffler Klinik, where Bond finds Madeleine Swann, is ice Q, a glass restaurant at 3,048 metres on the Gaislachkogel above Sölden, reached by cable car. The restaurant calls itself the filming location of Spectre. Tyrol’s tourist board says the crew filmed there and on the Ötztal Glacier Road in January 2015. It says the road up to the Rettenbach glacier, at 2,829 metres, was opened specially in winter for the chase, which used 45 Range Rovers and two Britten-Norman Islander aircraft.

Next to the restaurant is 007 ELEMENTS, a Bond exhibition built into the rock of the mountain. Ötztal Tourismus says the building was designed by the architects Obermoser and that the concept inside is by Neal Callow, an art director on the Bond films.

Both are reached only by the Gaislachkogl cable car. Ötztal Tourismus lists the 2026 to 2027 winter season for 007 ELEMENTS as 12 November 2026 to 18 April 2027, daily from 9 am to 4.30 pm with last entry at 3.30 pm, and ice Q opens daily from 9 am to 4 pm in the same season. A valid ski pass, or an Ötztal Summer Card in summer, covers the cable car.

Obertilliach: the end of the chase

The chase ends in East Tyrol, at Obertilliach. Tyrol’s tourist board says a barn was taken apart in Styria and rebuilt at the top of a piste in the Golzentipp ski area, where locals called it the Bond House, and that filming used four places in and around the village, with extra snow added to its listed centre. Apart from one small hut, the board says, the film buildings were removed and the cut through the forest has been replanted.

Morocco: Tangier, the train and the crater

The James Bond Dossier says scenes were shot in the medina in Tangier, including a palace used for the Hotel L’Américain, and names Bab el-Assa, a gateway in the old walls, among the places you can still pick out; our Tangier page covers the old town. The Dossier says the train scenes were filmed outside Oujda, and the Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations names the train as the Oriental Desert Express between Oujda and Bouarfa. Oujda is in north-eastern Morocco, close to the Algerian border. We could not confirm a current timetable.

Blofeld’s base sits in Gara Medouar, a horseshoe of rock near Erfoud, though The James Bond Dossier says the house inside the crater was filmed on the outskirts of Marrakesh. In the desert Bond wears a Brunello Cucinelli linen-blend jacket with Brunello Cucinelli chinos.
